Note: For prompt 30: ending for[livejournal.com profile] spn_30snapshots . This is one of the shorter, simpler ones (the ones I'm writing and posting first, because I'm lazy like that.)

There’s no grave for Sam to crawl out of, no body to be repaired and his soul returned to. Instead he gasps into life surrounded by damp dirt, a drastic change from the icey emptiness of Lucifer’s cage, from the sudden bolts of energy that lit up every nerve with pure agony.

He claws his way up through the dirty, lungs burning and desperate for air, before he breaks through the surface a few feet above. Almost immediately someone grabs his hand and pulls him free.

Sam’s first thought is Dean, closely followed by Castiel. It’s only when he sees the grim smile that he allows himself to think, Gabriel.

“You died,” he whispers through a mouth that feels raw and bloody, freshly torn open. He’s naked in the cold night air, but Gabriel tugs him closer, running his fingers through his hair to dislodge the dirt. It’s an oddly gentle act, the slow slide of fingers across his scalp. “In the DVD you said you died.”

Gabriel shurgs, positioning Sam so that he slumps back against the archanger’s chest, pressing his free hand across his heart. Warmth blossoms from the contact, spreading through his body. “We all died. I’m pretty sure that was His plan- that and showing what free will can do when it’s used for important things.”

Above them the sky is alight with shooting stars and lightning that shouldn’t be there. Sam tries not to look, already knowing what he’s seeing: angels are falling, by choice or as a punishment, he has no idea. He doesn’t ask Gabriel, and Gabriel doesn’t say anything about what’s happening to his brothers.

“Is it over?” Lucifer’s gone, but so are Jo and Ellen and Ash and all the other people who didn’t deserve to get caught in the middle.

Gabriel sighs, wrapping his arms around Sam’s chest. “Luci’s locked up, if that’s what you’re wondering, and he isn’t getting out anytime soon. Dean’s with Lisa, and Castiel’s living the high life upstairs.”

“So what do we do next?” There are still demons to find and send back to Hell, still people to help.

“We find our brothers and try and convince Dean to let me in the car.”
