Notes: None. Title adapted from a line in OneRepublic’s Secrets.

1. Motion
The humvee jerks beneath Walt, Ray swears in the front and Walt tries to keep his eyes on the Iraqis in the distance.

2. Cool
It's too hot, and Ray misses the way the cars he used to lean against were sometimes cold.

3. Young
Somewhere before someone said, "Shit, you're just a kid," and Walt tried not to think about it when he watched a man's head explode for the first time.

4. Last
Almost too quickly, Ray realises can’t wait until he can leave Iraq, leave the whole mess, and never look back.

5. Wrong
It's the middle of the night when Ray elbows his way between Walt and Trombley, ignoring the latter's complaints, to tell him the latest rumour that's making its way through the camp: this time it's about a model having an affair with the leader of an international drugs cartel, who was shot by the cops through his girlfriend.

6. Gentle
Days after they arrive in Iraq, the back of Walt's neck starts blistering in the sun, despite being covered most of the time; Ray's fingers move slowly across the reddened, painful skin as he reaches for one of the bottles of water he hoarded just in case.

7. One
Ray's talking, talking, talking somewhere in the background, and Walt should really stop, should have his first combat jack when he can't hear his friend talking in the background, but he doesn't, and he hears Ray laugh just before he comes.

8. Thousand
People are going to die, Ray knows: people are going to die and it's going to suck because good people are going to keep getting blown up because Saddam Hussein is a stupid bastard with an ego too big for his own good, and it's a horrible though, but he hopes that the people who are killed aren't people he likes (aren't Walt).

9. King
Brad has a photo of Ray wearing a crown, a glitter covered, bright pink crown and Walt isn’t going to be the one to ask about it.

10. Learn
If you don’t stick close to the people around you, you’re going to get killed, and that seems like a good reason to stay close to Walt.

11. Blur
Walt likes to lie on his back and stare at the distant (and sometimes closer) explosions until he can feel his head beginning to ache and his vision begins to blur.

12. Wait
Beside him, Ray laughs, but he still stays there until Walt looks away from the sky.

13. Change
Walt would give anything for a change of clothes: his first born child, ten years of his life, anything to get the MOPP suit off because he can’t stand the way it’s sticking to his skin, the way he can almost smell his own sweat (Ray says that it isn’t that bad, but he’s either lying or he’s got something wrong with his sense of smell).

14. Command
It starts to become normal for Walt to get a short distance away from wherever they’re going to sleep before he hears Ray yell, loud enough for everyone to hear, “Hey, wait for me!”

15. Hold
It’s just practice, just in case they have to get up close and personal with anyone who gets too close, but the slide of Ray’s hands over Walt’s skin, the way his fingers press against his throat, feel took gentle for anything they’re supposed to be doing.

16. Need
Whatever he’s feeling, it’s something strange and a little desperate, and Walt swears he tries to lose it (not because he wants to, but because he needs to lose it) when they go to Iraq.

17. Vision
The light blinds Ray for seconds and he swears, yells about how fucking stupid they are, how can they not give a shit about the people on the ground?

18. Attention
“Walt,” Ray calls and Walt looks around, almost smiling as soon as he sees him.

19. Soul
One night, so hyped up on Ripped Fuel that every thought that goes through his head turns into an entire exploration or everything possibly related to it, Ray wonders what Walt’s soul looks like; Walt is, after all, one of the best people he knows.

20. Picture
When Lilley finishes his film, Walt’s pretty sure there are going to be some pretty incriminating photos floating about – Ray drawing on Trombley’s face, Ray eating the food Brad

21. Fool
Walt can’t decide if he likes it or not when Ray stops playing the fool for five minutes, when he goes quiet and talks to him like he’s got something amazing hidden in his head and he’s got to let it out slowly or it’s going to leave and never come back.

22. Mad
This (life, situation, war, job, world) can drive people crazy, and sometimes it feels like Ray’s counting down the days until the next person snaps or changes; he can’t get a good read on Walt.

23. Child
Ray keeps talking to Walt as they pass the little girl's body, just so that he doesn't see one more dead kid.

24. Now
There’s going to be a later, there has to be.

25. Shadow
Sometimes, Walt walks around with Ray, just to hear him talking about whatever's pissed him off today.

26. Goodbye
“Hey,” Ray says, just when Walt’s starting to think that Ray’s going to walk away and never look back at any of them again when they get home, “where are you going when we get back?”

27. Hide
Walt’s got an apartment, somewhere they can both stay, and it’s away from prying eyes.

28. Fortune
Staying in one piece here, it’s half skill and half luck, and Walt can’t get that out of his head.

29. Safe
Ray’s all sharp angles, elbows digging into Walt’s ribs when they hit the ground as something explodes, sticking close and searching for whoever just tried to kill them, for anything else that can kill them and somewhere safe to run before they become sitting ducks with targets painted on their backs.

30. Ghost
Walt lies in his grave and thinks about Trombley and mistakes you can’t take back.

31. Book
At home, Walt’s got an old book full of family photos and a group photo none of his family members have ever seen.

32. Eye
Sometimes they stare a little too hard, for a little too long, but it’s not as if it’s unusual (ask Brad, ask anyone but Trombley).

33. Never
Walt kills a man—that’s not that unusual, but this one doesn’t deserve to die, he didn’t meant to do it, and that makes all the difference because he’s never wanted to kill an innocent person.

34. Sing
It feels like Ray’s constantly singing whatever overly happy song he can think of, and Walt can’t get him to shut up, no matter how much he ignores him.

35. Sudden
He’ll never admit it, but Ray’s surprised when Walt finally reacts.

36. Stop
“Stop it,” Walt says, and his voice is firm (firmer than it’s been since he shot the civilian, and Ray’s glad, he really is,) and Ray’s almost tempted to listen to him, “just stop it.”

37. Time
It’s a risk he’ll never take, but Walt wishes that he has his old digital watch; he’s losing his sense of time and he keeps waking up in the middle of the night to Ray muttering something in his sleep and Trombley staring at him from his grave.

38. Wash
The baby wipes feel greasy against his skin, but they're better than nothing: Walt's halfway through what passes for a shower out here when he meets Ray's eyes.

39. Torn
There's a second when neither of them really know what to do, trying not to let their eyes stray, but neither of them look away.

40. History
"This happened before," Ray says, and any possibility of a conversation about last night dissolves into Ray ranting about how Saddam Hussein's a bastard with less brains than a cockroach with mutated DNA.

41. Power
It's not like if anything happens between Brad and Nate, Walt reasons (he's not blind, and it's not as unlikely as Trombley seems to think it is) because Ray's not in charge of Walt.

42. Bother
"Are we ever going to talk about it?" Walt hisses, catching Ray's arm and holding on when Ray tries to shake him off.

43. God
Walt keeps one hand across Ray's mouth the first time they duck behind one of the humvees, the encounter little less than a hurried grope; Walt's hand unsteady and Ray's too quick, groping inside his MOPP suit, and Walt can't catch his breath after he comes, Ray moaning filthy words against his fingers.

44. Wall
The second time (and the third, fourth and maybe the sixth times) are against the wall in Ray's apartment, Ray swearing under his breath the whole time, hips jerking against Walt's and fingers tight around his wrists.

45. Naked
It's the middle of the night when Ray wakes up and stretches out across the bed, one leg tangled with Walt's and one arm thrown across his chest; the air conditioning rattles in the background, blowing cool air across his bare skin.

46. Drive
The car keys are always sitting on the table, and sometimes it takes all of Ray’s self-control—which isn’t always very much—to stop himself from getting in his car and driving until he runs out of road.

47. Harm
The back of Walt’s neck is still raw and blistered weeks after they get home, but the images of bodies on the roadside that keep coming back to haunt him remind him that it could have been much worse; Ray’s fingers are still gentle when he rubs the salve across the skin.

48. Precious
Walt traces Ray's tattoos whenever he can't sleep, running his fingers around the edges, digging his nails in a little if Ray wakes up and starts talking.

49.Hunger
In the morning, Ray usually demands bacon and eggs; Walt usually tells him to get off his lazy ass and make it himself.

50. Believe
In the middle of Iraq, mind full of dead bodies and destroyed homes, Walt remembers that he thought there has to be more, and, trying to stop Ray from hogging the covers, knows that he was right.
